Spring Pond Cleaning Tips So You Know What Happens

Spring is one of the most exhilarating times of the year. Birds return from their southern migration, furry critters awaken from their winter slumber, trees begin budding, and your pond fish start stretching and warming up their fins for summer swimming! As a pond owner, the best thing you can do to ensure the health of your pond this season is to give it a thorough cleaning—whether it’s a full clean-out or just a bit of sprucing up. Welcome to Pond Universe, your trusted source for all things pond care, including expert tips on spring pond cleaning.

Assess Your Pond

Start by examining your pond and asking, “Does my water feature need a full clean-out, or just a little tidying up?” Here's what to look for:

  • Full Clean-Out Needed: If there is a significant layer of debris at the bottom of the pond and the water appears dark or murky, it’s time for a deep clean.

  • Light Cleaning: If there’s only a small number of debris that can be easily stirred up and removed with a net, and the water remains clear, a light tidy-up will suffice.

If you decide on a full clean-out, plan to dedicate half to a full day. Pondless Waterfalls typically take much less time. Alternatively, you can hire a professional to handle the job. At Pond Universe, we recommend consulting our network of pond care professionals for expert assistance with your Spring Pond Cleaning.

When to Clean Your Pond

The ideal time for a pond clean-out is early spring, before your water garden fully awakens from its winter dormancy. This is typically when the water temperature is below 55ºF. Cleaning at this stage helps avoid disturbing the balance of bacteria colonies that form as the ecosystem comes to life. Cleaning later, when water temperatures are higher, can disrupt this balance and lead to algae blooms.

Supplies for Cleaning

To clean your pond, gather the following tools and materials:

  • A clean-out pump with approximately 25 ft. of discharge hose

  • A high-pressure nozzle for your garden hose or a power washer

  • Garden shears for trimming plants

  • A child’s swimming pool or similar container to temporarily house fish

  • A net or cover to prevent fish from jumping out

  • Two five-gallon buckets for debris collection

  • A fish net

At Pond Universe, we’ve curated a range of pond cleaning supplies to make your Spring Pond Cleaning easier and more efficient.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

1. Drain the Pond Water

  • Place the clean-out pump at the deepest part of the pond to remove water.

  • Drain the water into the surrounding landscape, moving the discharge pipe periodically to avoid flooding.

  • Use some pond water to fill the holding container for your fish. Once the water is low enough, gently catch the fish with a net and transfer them to the holding pool. Keep the pool shaded and covered to prevent fish from jumping out.

2. Rinse and Remove Debris

  • Use a garden hose or pressure washer to rinse the inside of the pond. Remove debris from rocks and gravel, but don’t scrub away all algae; some algae are beneficial for your pond’s ecosystem.

  • Start rinsing from the top of the pond and work your way down. Periodically pump out dirty water until the water runs clear. Then, remove the pump and start refilling the pond.

3. Clean the Filters

  • Clear debris from the bottom of the skimmer by hand or with the clean-out pump.

  • Remove media nets and filter pads from the filter. If equipped with a drain kit, open the valve to rinse the media and filters. Once cleaned, replace them and reattach the waterfall pump.

4. Acclimate the Fish

  • After refilling the pond, add  Pond Detoxifier to make the water safe for fish.

  • Gradually acclimate fish to the pond’s temperature by placing them in buckets of holding water and submerging the buckets in the pond for about 15 minutes. Spray pond water into the buckets periodically.

  • Once the water temperatures equalize, gently release the fish into their clean home.
